Howdy Campers,
It\’s nice to be sharing more thoughts with you all. No matter how many posts I write, the number of topics I wish to cover grows every month!
One of the themes that has become more and more prominent over the 9.5 years I\’ve been teaching is the desire of people to find purpose in what they\’re doing, most notably in their career choices. This appears to have risen significantly since the pandemic forced us all to stop and take a breath.
But even then, I would say the number of people actively seeking this is still a fraction of the number of people suffering the malaise of work dissatisfaction, and indeed general life dissatisfaction. Now you won\’t necessarily hear them give voice to such a stark assessment – its far too uncomfortable a reality for most people to admit.
But you see evidence of it everywhere. At work, it\’s a general lack of energy and inspiration. It\’s a need to use stress, adrenaline and caffeine to get through the day. It\’s having inner monologues about how shit the boss/colleague/client is, or worse, constantly voicing it and creating toxic vibes. Maybe\’s it\’s a screeching sense of entitlement that manifests itself at every opportunity. Or maybe it\’s simply falling back on the excuse that \’I\’ve got to pay the mortgage\’. Personally I don\’t buy this.
Obviously it\’s tough times at the moment, and it may well get worse before it gets better. Job security will potentially take on an importance that hasn\’t been so prevalent since the early nineties. That may not actually be a bad thing as it may balance out the sense of entitlement with a sense of responsibility.
But something I feel we could all do with a little more perspective on is the idea that somehow following your purpose and being a breadwinner are mutually exclusive propositions.
But is that really true? First of all, if you\’re doing something you really believe in it gives you an energy, a positivity, a sense of creativity and inspiration which means you are much more likely to excel than if you simply paint by numbers in a stressed out way. And people who outperform almost always get paid well. Or at least well enough to make it more than worth it.
The other consideration is how much your salary needs to be padded with extra dough to compensate for your lack of purpose? Because if you\’re waking up every day energised by your sense of purpose, living quite modestly is no great shakes. There is a wealth in this that goes way beyond material possessions.
And interestingly, there\’s much less need to constantly strive for dream scenarios in the glorious future, because you\’re already experiencing way more glory in the present.
And this really touches upon the theme of this email, which is not just to consider what your professional purpose is, but to actually encourage you all to be bolder in truly living your purpose. Because whilst we spend half of our waking life at work, the other half is also just as important, if not more so. We all wear numerous hats and perform various roles, but what is the quality of what you\’ve giving to those things? Are we a living, breathing embodiment of uplifting and inspiring energy, sprinkling our fairy dust on the people around us and inspiring them with our mere presence? Or are we zombying our way through life with a painted smile, or a painfully obvious hunch in our shoulders?
And of course, then there\’s our sleep-life. If we\’re not getting good quality of sleep, it\’s either because our subconscious is disturbed, or our nervous system is too stimulated. And often its both, because people who feel existentially unsettled always seek out lots of stimulation in order to try and avoid the uncomfortable reality that is apparent whenever the nervous system settles down (unless it is so settled that you transcend your problems and realise the deeper truths of your being).
Now we can take practical steps to turn the stimulation factor down, and our twice a day meditation is a big part of that. But how are we going to fix the existential concern? It\’s either through spiritual healing and growth, and/or it\’s beginning to truly live your purpose, whereby you\’re no longer a slave to your circumstances, because you\’ve found a way to master them. You\’ve developed the capability to design your life with more happiness and fulfilment at the heart of it. And crucially there\’s a sense of wisdom, purpose and belonging that underpins it.
Is there anyone out there who isn\’t up for that?
Thought not.
Now in order to make that real, the first step is to admit with candid honesty where the dissatisfactions are. Not with a view to being a victim to fortune, but instead to help facilitate empowered choices about re-architecting our lives so that we are setup to actually succeed in living our purpose.
It then becomes a case of how we actually go about achieving it. Because its all very well deciding that that\’s what we want as a general principle, but knowing what will actually help us achieve that is a whole other story.
There\’s a journey to take. It requires you to connect with your deepest essence. And to connect with that ineffable bigger thing that exists if you allow yourself to experience it. Because there is something that is bigger than you, me, and all of us. It connects us. It unites us. And it surrounds us. It is an unseen force that flows through us, and around us. It is Here, There and Everywhere, to quote a quite brilliant ballad.
Peeps have been talking about these things and engaging in practises that facilitate this connection for at least 50,000 years, and probably a lot longer. Sometimes people got lost in trying to follow rules and scriptures to achieve it, but there have been torches of wisdom passing down from master to student for time immemorial.
Often the greatest knowledge was shared discretely, and even now, amongst all the hot air and noise, such knowledge exists. For the first time in a long time, it\’s actually relatively easy to access it, at least in certain languages.
Unfortunately, most of us have grown up in such rationalist cultures, or such dogmatic ones (rationalism is in itself a dogma), that we find ourselves growing up spiritually disconnected and somewhat lost in the fog of what society suggests are the most helpful ideals to live by. But of course, with each passing generation, and with each new philosophical evolution, we still find ourselves lost, because we have discarded the very idea that a worthwhile spiritual reality even exists. Or even if it does exist, we are much better focusing on survival, and materialism, because spiritual connection is a luxury good.
Ha!
It blows my mind that this could be such a pervasively implicit view, but it is very difficult to escape the conclusion that this is indeed so.
Now I\’m hoping that most of you are you doing your twice a day practise, which is an essential component of establishing such connection. If you\’re not doing it twice a day, it\’s worth considering getting back on the bus, because otherwise, you\’ll likely find yourself fumbling around in the dark, and getting disheartened by your inability to efficiently progress.
However, if you really want to go for gold, we recommend you do more. That you find ways to help you move body and soul to a better, more balanced place, from which to get this essential component of your life more comprehensively sorted.
That doesn\’t necessarily need to be via us. There are many talented and brilliant people out there who can assist you on your journey. But obviously if you want to lean on us, we do have some offerings that will slingshot you to where you need to be. All you\’ve got to do is say yes.
Now whether it\’s making big life decisions, or weighing up the possibility of making big life progress with developmental work, watch out for justifications that it\’s not the right time. Or, i\’ll just do this for three more years then i\’ll look for my purpose. The right time will never come. Three years will become five, seven, ten, thirty. Before you know it, you will have sacrificed large chunks of your life for what benefit?
It\’s time for all of us to start living our purpose more. Not tomorrow. Nor next week. It\’s time to thrive. Now.
But don\’t just believe me. Take time out. Walk in nature. De-excite your nervous system with meditation. Tune in. And see what that little whisper inside tells you. If you\’re reading this and there\’s a ring of truth to it, then stay alert for opportunities to amp up your journey. If you\’re reading it and feeling resistance, or discomfort, that probably means you know deep down its true, but the uglier parts of you don\’t want to acknowledge that truth, and are agitating for more of the status quo. Take care with that. It will not serve you well.
Ultimately, the human journey is filled with challenges and complexity. But it can be made very simple with the right guidance. And the more you follow your inner light, the easier it gets. The tables turn and you go from slave to master in no time at all.
Flow replaces rigidity. Self-Confidence succeeds inhibition. Life success supersedes ennui. And fulfilment blossoms from a background sense that something is missing.
You can spend your whole life looking outside of yourself for that if you like. And whilst there are very few guarantees in life, I can absolutely guarantee you that you will never find it by trying to fill your life with money, fame, power or things. There is nothing in the external world that can plug that gap. It\’s an internal hole that can only be filled from the inside. And there are thousands of years of masters who can be leaned upon to inform how you can do that in the most powerful way. If you tap into that, then not only will the whole world become your oyster. The whole universe will.
