Here we are in the glories of India, taking a break after what has been a ridiculously busy year. It feels like we\’ve rolled all our weekends into one extended break and our bodies are singing in thanks.
This brings us nicely to the subject of dynamic rest. At least one of our newsletters has extolled the virtues of not waiting, and it would be easy to infer from that that it is therefore all about being engaged in dynamic action. But that of courses misses the key activity of rest. Rest isn\’t waiting and it isn\’t for wimps as Gordon Gecko might have proclaimed, it is a vital component of living a balanced and fulfilled life.
With more stimulation in one day than we used to receive in one month, and with one and a half hours less sleep at night, the chronic levels of imbalance we are seeing in the world has much to do with our inability to rest properly. Even when we attempt it, we are plugged into the grid with mobiles and email and so our nervous system is ever more strained.
What we get with mediocre levels of rest in our lives is mediocre levels of activity. What we get when we bring dynamic rest into the equation is dynamic levels of activity whereby the clarity and energy we are privy to, powers us through life in an efficient and effortless way. This is where transcendental meditation is such a game changer. The resonant qualities of the mantras bring so much stillness to the core of your brain, and so much coherence to the cortex, that your nervous system is able to descend to a level of resting alpha activity that is far superior to anything you may gain in sleep. As a result, when you open your eyes and return to activity, there is a sense of renewal and a significant shift in your capacity to operate at your peak. Your reaction times improve, the coherence of your brain is much greater, and the physical and emotional energy required to do all that we must is fortified.
On those occasions when you use the meditation to tactically fund some short term unsustainability, for instance, when you take on a big project, start a new enterprise, or undertake some other activity which causes you to cut down your rest periods and deplete your reserves, then it is always wise is to redress the balance before the shortfall starts eating into your productivity and starts causing physiological imbalance.
When we\’re going about our lives, it is always tempting to do a little bit more, and a little bit more, and before you know it, you are in a cycle of unsustainability. The Beeja worldview would be; break the symmetry, let the world live without you for a while, and see that all will be alright in the end and that you will once more be right for it.
Do that within your day with the meditation, and continue for the weeks, months and years to reclaim the vitality, creativity and perspective which will guide you towards ever higher outcomes.
And so here we are in India, taking five weeks of blissful immersion in beingness. And once the batteries are fully charged, we\’ll be back for even more teaching than before, bounding from the vitality of restoring our waxed reserves.
